The air has changed. You know what that means.
Practical Magic, plans with the girls, and a few autumn things I’ve been keeping busy with.
Right, I need to talk to you about Practical Magic 2.
Me and my girls watch the first film every year, without fail, around autumn and Halloween. We wait until the vibes feel right. You know when you step outside and there’s that little chill, and suddenly you’re mentally locating your favourite jumper?
That’s when.
So, as a millennial who was completely obsessed with the original, the fact that we’re going to a screening of Practical Magic 2 next week is quite a significant event in my calendar/life.
Sandra and Nicole are back! My girls diaries have aligned, and we’re all going on a cinema date together. Eeeeek.
If this means something to you too, please imagine me reaching across the table and grabbing your arm.
Because you understand.
The house. The kitchen. Gillian’s fire. Sally’s steadiness. And the sassy aunts with their midnight margaritas. That whole slightly wild, beautiful world where herbs and flowers hang from the beams.. but the women live in secret, and embrace the magic of it all behind closed doors.
But above all else those women are showing up for each other.
You can see why it became cult!
I think part of the excitement is getting to revisit something you loved, every year, since.. well.. 20+ years ago.
We spend so much time organising things. Remembering things. Being the person who knows what needs to happen next. It is a particular pleasure to have something in the diary that makes you feel a bit warm and fuzzy.
I want to enjoy the anticipation, too. Talk about it beforehand. Discuss absolutely everything afterwards. Have opinions about the clothes.
Our annual rewatch of the original still has its place, obviously. The sequel is additional bonus.
And a night like that deserves hot drinks that require a little assembly. Hot chocolate, whipped cream, perhaps an unnecessary amount of marshmallows. Chai in a big mug. Something sweet to pick at. Blankets distributed according to who feels the cold most, Chloe.
Come comfortable. Bring snacks. We’ll pause it if the conversation gets good.
Honestly, I want more of this over the next few months.
Getting everyone’s diaries to align feels like a minor act of witchcraft in itself, but I’m always so glad when we manage it. There’s a version of you that comes out around your girls. The ridiculous conversations, the laughing at something nobody else would find funny, remembering things you’d forgotten until someone brings them up.
It’s easy to miss that when you’re busy being responsible for everything.
And I think that’s why I’m feeling quite protective of the cosy season this year. I want to enjoy it while it’s happening. Make the plans, get the blankets out, light the candle I’ve been saving for absolutely no reason.
Some evenings I want everyone over. Others, I want a bath, clean pyjamas and complete control of the television. Both deserve a little space in the diary.
Before we disappear into Christmas organising, I’m having a small think about what I actually want these months to look like. Who I want to see. What I’ve missed doing. Which things I keep putting off even though I know they make me happy.
Perhaps there’s something you’ve been meaning to arrange, too. Consider this your nudge to put it in the group chat. Someone has to get the ball rolling.
Meanwhile, over at Karmbox, you can probably tell that I’ve been in a very autumnal mood.
The first little collection is now on the website, and Hearth & Hocus is very much for the cosy witches among us. A black velvet astrology journal, spell candles, seasonal scents, bath salts and a moon face incense holder. Things to reach for when you’ve finally put your phone down and settled in for the evening.
I’ve also added the Autumn Folk candles: Toasted Pumpkin with a raven, Spiced Vanilla with a moth, and Black Fig with a black cat. They look very at home beside a large mug and a slightly excessive pile of blankets.
There’s more coming. This is just the beginning, and I wanted to share it with you while it’s taking shape. I spend a lot of time thinking about what you might enjoy opening, using and giving to someone you love. This collection has been particularly fun to put together.
You can have a little browse at the first autumn arrivals here.
For now, I’d love to know what officially starts autumn for you. A film? A particular drink? The first evening you put the heating on and refuse to feel guilty about it?
And please tell me if you’re going to see Practical Magic 2. I’ll report back after our cinema date. No spoilers, but probably quite a lot of feelings.
Love,
Kelly x
